The Ciphone C5, also called the Ciphone 5, is a Ciphone that is rather expensive at $300 but has some nice features and is fast. The follow-on model is the C6 was announced around May 21st, 2009. It has a higher resolution screen than the C5.
Main concerns about this phone:
One reseller has reported that the built-in GPS may not work.
It has the Apple logo on the back. This in my view is unnecessary and undesirable.
Does it have a icon menu as you see on the iPhone?
According to Yeeway the phone has an Apple-like icon menu on both the Chinese and English versions of the phone.
I have not tried the C5 myself but probably it is a similar menu to what the Miphone M88 has.
Is it really quadband GSM?
That is what the ads say.
What is quadband? This term means that a phone supports all four GSM frequencies and can therefore be used anywhere in the world. These frequences are 850 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz and 1900 MHz.
What does the Ciphone C5 offer?
It’s media-centric cellular phone with loads of features, typically including:
The quadband GSM phone itself
The C5 has a 240×320 3.2 inch display w/65536 colors.
The C6 will have a 320×480 3.5 inch display if it is ever released.
Windows Mobile 6.1
Wifi 802.11b/g support
4 GB built-in flash that is not expandable.
128 MB RAM
256 MB firmware ROM
EDGE
1.3 megapixel camera
Video recorder 320×240 resolution
Video player
Image viewer
Calculator
Voice recorder
Email
Bluetooth
Text messaging (SMS)
Multimedia messaging (MMS)
Claimed Java 2.0
Claimed GPS support (may not work)
Is there a shake/orientation sensor?
Yes.
How does this phone compare to the Sciphone i68+?
Since it has Windows Mobile you could say that it is more of a productivity-oriented phone. It has mobile versions of Word, Excel et cetera built-in. It has Wifi and a decent camera. The i68+ lacks these features but is much cheaper.
The processor speed of the i68+ is between 26 and 108 MHz whereas the C5 runs at 450 MHz. The i68+’s MT6225 processor has special functional units however that accelerate specific operations like JPEG decompression.
What processor does it have?
It has the Samsung 2443C running at 450 MHz. That’s plenty fast for most everything you will do.
As yet I haven’t been able to locate technical specifications for this processor.
Does it support GPS?
That is what the ads claim. They say that it’s built-in. However one reseller has reported that it doesn’t work.
It could be argued that if there is any doubt about the GPS, it might be safer and easier to just buy a cheaper phone like the M88 and a separate GPS.
Do these work with an external Bluetooth keyboard?
This phone, like almost all phones, has Bluetooth. Whether an external keyboard will work is unknown to me at this time but the Palm 3245WW keyboard is known to work with Windows Mobile phones if you download their driver and install it on the phone.
That driver is on this Palm page. Some say that a different driver is required. See my M88 hands-on review for more information.
Anyway if it does work, this feature alone could make the phone very valuable as a note-taking device. I used Windows CE in the past like this and it was much easier than writing on paper.
