Fenitrothion is an organophosphate Insecticide.

1. In experiments Fenitrothion at sublethal doses affected the motor movement of marsupials; and at acute dose levels Fenitrothion reduced the energy of birds.
2. In chonic (low) dose tests, unexpectedly only the lowest concentration (0.011 microgram/liter) of Fenitrothion depressed the growth of an algae, though all of the chronic dose levels used were toxic in other ways to the algae.
3. Just half of Fenitrothion’s minimally effective dose altered the thyroid structure of a freshwater murrel (the snakehead fish).
4. Fenitrothion is far less toxic than parathion with a range of insecticidal activity that is very similar and is similar enough in structure to be produced in the same factories.
5. The difference in precursor chemicals might make it somewhat more expensive, but it is heavily used in other countries, including Japan, where parathion has been banned.
6. Fenitrothion comes in dust, emulsifiable concentrate, flowable, fogging concentrate, granules, ULV, oil-based liquid spray, and wettable powder formultaions. Fenitrothion is available as a 95% concentrate, 50% emulsifiable concentrate, 40% and 50% wettable powder and 2%, 2.5%, 3% and 5% dusts (2, 125).
