Resveratrol

Basic Description
1. Sources and Habitat

Resveratrol is found in the skin of red grapes and in other fruits. Red wine contains very little of it, however, on the order of 0.1-14.3 mg/l. Resveratrol also has been produced by chemical synthesis and by biotechnological synthesis (metabolic engineered microorganisms).

2. Indications and Uses

Life extension, Cancer prevention, Cardioprotective effects, Antidiabetic effects, Neuroprotective effects, Anti-inflammatory effects, Antiviral effects, Effect on testosterone levels, Selective and Reversible MAO-A inhibiting effects (RIMA).

Potential uses of resveratrol that include reduction of harmful LDL blood cholesterol, prevention of blood clot formation and prevention of blood vessel injury. The presence of resveratrol may also inhibit the growth of a number of cancers, states OregonStateUniversity, including cancers of the prostate, breast, colon, pancreas, thyroid, stomach, esophagus and intestines.

3. Safety Concerns

Pregnancy and breast-feeding: Resveratrol is LIKELY SAFE when used in amounts found in some foods, but during pregnancy and breast-feeding, the source of resveratrol is important. Resveratrol is found in grape skins, grape juice, wine, and other food sources. But wine should not be used as a source of resveratrol during pregnancy and breast-feeding.

Hormone-sensitive condition such as breast cancer, uterine cancer, ovarian cancer, endometriosis, or uterine fibroids: Resveratrol might act like estrogen. If you have any condition that might be made worse by exposure to estrogen, don’t use resveratrol.

Surgery: Resveratrol might increase the risk of bleeding during and after surgery. Stop using resveratrol at least 2 weeks before a scheduled surgery.

4. Dosage Information

The appropriate dose of resveratrol depends on several factors such as the user's age, health, and several other conditions. At this time, there is not enough scientific information to determine an appropriate range of doses for resveratrol. Keep in mind that natural products are not always necessarily safe and dosages can be important. Be sure to follow relevant directions on product labels and consult your pharmacist or physician or other healthcare professional before using.
