Introduction
Caoheijing High-tech Park(CHJHTP) was initially set up as an ETDZ in 1988. In 1991, Caoheijing was granted the status of state-leve high-level high-tech development zone. CHJHTP became the only state-level development zone that enjoyed preferential policies granted to both economic & technological development zones and high-tech parks. Located in the southwest part of Shanghai, CHJHTP is 11 km from downtown Shanghai, 7 km from Xujiahui Commercial District and 7 km from Hongqiao Airport.
CHJHTP is surrounded by more than 20 universities and colleges, such as Shanghai Jiaotong University, and is of close proximity to the downtown area. The zone is dedicated to the development of high technology in the fields of microelectronics, IT products, software, telecommunications, laser technology, bio-engineering, new materials and aerospace technology.
There are more than 1,000 enterprises in CHJHTP. Major domestic enterprises including Datang Mobile, Zhongxin Telecommunication and many foreign world-renowned enterprises have set up subsidiaries in the zone, for example, GE, 3M, Nortel, Toshiba, Schneider, Lucent, an Dupont. Advanced Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (ASMC), previously known as Philips Semiconductor (Shanghai) has three fabs in CHJHTP, one 8 inch, one 6- inch and one 5-inch.
Besides manufacturing, software and IT systems is another important industry in CHJHTP. Many financial institutions have set up their computer centers or research units in CHJHTP. They include Bank of China (Shanghai Branch) computer center, Bank of Communications computer center, Agricultural Bank of China (Shanghai Branch) computer center, and Pudong Development Bank credit card and computer center.
To accommodate more foreign investors, Pujiang High-tech Sub- Park was established in Pujiang Town with a planned area of 8.3 km2. The Caohejing Export Processing Zone, with a first-phase completed area of 0.9km2 , had passed the examination of the relevant authorities in November 2003. It will boost the export-oriented manufacturing industry in Caohejing High-tech Park.
