Introduction
Taicang Economic and Technological Development Zone (TCETDZ) is located at the eastern part of Taicang city. With a total development area of 55 km2, the Zone was established in January 1991 and was upgraded to a province-level zone in 1993. The development of TCETDZ is planned for three phases. The first phase of 12 km2 has been completed.
Taicang is under the administration of Suzhou and is just adjacent to Jiading District in Shanghai. TCETDZ is 18 km from Taicang Port and 40 km from Shanghai Hongqiao Airport.
Investment Climate
By end-2003, more than 730 projects with total investment of RMB 17 billion (USD 2.06 billion) had been attracted to TCETDZ. The total number of FIEs was around 219 and total investment was USD 1.5 billion.
Japanese and German companies formed the biggest clusters. More than 26 Japanese enterprises have established subsidiaries in the Zone, mainly specializing in fields like electronics, information technology and garment manufacturing.
Most of the 28 German enterprises in TCETDZ specialize in the fields of designing and manufacturing of precision instruments. A training school providing training courses for the prospective employees of German enterprises has been set up by theJiangsu and German governments.
The FIEs in TCETDZ include Wall'sChina Co. Ltd. (Taicang), Nike (Suzhou) Sports Co. Ltd., Trane Air Conditioner Co. Ltd., C&H Toys Co. Ltd., Tiger Drylac Co. Ltd., Keerya Knitting Co. Ltd., Kern-Liebers Springs Co. Ltd., Tox-Pressotechnik Ltd., Wegoma Machinery Equipment Co. Ltd., Shimei Electonics, KOA Electronics Co. Ltd., Taitrok Co. Ltd., German Enterprise Technician Train Center and Yokohoma Tape Co. Ltd. Industries covered include precision instruments, biomedicine, electronics, information technology, food processing, real estate and tourism.
