Introduction
Urumqi Economic and Technological
Development Zone (UETDZ) was established in 1992
and officially approved by the State Council on 25
August 1994. The first phase of UETDZ takes up
4.34 km2 while the second phase takes
up 10.03 km2.
Located in Diwobao District in the new city
area of Urumqi city, UETDZ is 2 km from Urumqi
International Airport, 2 km from North Urumqi
Cargo Terminal, 3.5 km from West Railway Station
(a marshalling yard of the second Eurasia Land
Bridge) and about 10 km from South Urumqi Railway
Station (for passengers). This newly operated
railway provides additional land access between
China, Kazakhstan and other European countries. It
also serves as yet another strong lever, promoting
increased economic co-operation and commodity flow
between the two continents.
To boost export-oriented industries, Urumqi
Export Processing Zone (UEPZ) was approved by the
State Council to be set up in March 2003.
Investment
Climate
UETDZ also acts as a window
opening to Western China. Its unique location
provides UETDZ with special geographical
advantages.
The Chinese government, favoring regional
developments, has extended its policies to the
west of China. During the tenth Five-Year Plan
period, the central government will provide RMB
100 billion (USD 12.09 billion) to aid in the
development of the oil, grain, and cotton
resources in the region.
As the provincial capital, Urumqi will
certainly lead the way. As such, UETDZ is expected
to play a more important role in the future.
