Introduction
Kunming High-Tech Park (KMHTP) is
located at the northwestern part of Kunming. It
was approved by the State Council in 1992, and is
the province's only state-level high-tech park.
The total development area of the Park is 11.5
km2.
The Park consists of New District, Jinding
Science Park, Yunnan Software Development Park
(YNSDP), Yunnan University Science Park (YNUSP)
and Yunnan Modern Pharmaceuticals Park.
Yunnan University Science Park (YNUSP) was
established as an experimental site of University
Science Park in 1999 and was awarded the status of
national university science park in May 2001. The
Park is supported by Yunnan University, Kunming
University of Science & Technology and Yunnan
Normal University.
Yunnan Software Development Park (YNSDP) was
established in December 1998. Closely linked to
most of Yunnan's software enterprises and IT
organizations, YNSDP is an integral part of KMHTP.

Encouraged industries here
include bio-pharmaceuticals, IT and electronics,
new materials and optical-mechanical-electronic
integration technologies. By the end of 2003,
1,700 enterprises, including 150 high-tech ones,
had joined KMHTP. The number of high-tech
enterprises in the Park accounted for 80% of the
total in Yunnan.
Major enterprises include Yongkang
Pharmaceuticals, Junming Baker Norton, Kunming
Pharmaceuticals, Dianhong Pharmaceuticals, Yunnan
Tin Group and Yunnan Copper.
In 2003, the Park's industrial output reached
RMB 9.5 billion (USD 1.15 billion) and value-added
industrial output reached RMB 2.8 billion (USD 340
million).
There are numerous biopharmaceutical
enterprises and research institutions in the
Pharmaceutical Park, including Biological
Institute of Chinese Academy of Medical Science,
Kunming Pharmaceutical Group and Yunnan Baiyao
Pharmaceutical.
Relations have also been established with
Junming Medical College, Yunnan Pharmaceuticals,
Yunnan Drug Control Institute, Yunnan Bio-
Industry Research Institute, Yunnan Minority
Medicine Research Institute and Yunnan Spice
Research Institute.
Established in 1922, Yunnan University is now
recognized as a key university, thanks to the
Western Development Campaign. The University is
located in Kunming, the capital city of Yunnan
province.
The University currently has 15 colleges
covering a wide range of disciplines such
economics, executive education, arts and social
sciences, life science, chemistry, information
technology, development research, technical
training, law, public administration, business,
tourism, management, foreign languages, design
pharmaceuticals and international culture.
The University also owns three State Teaching
& Research Talents Development Bases. Two
State Key Subjects are now being undertaken at the
university. On top of that, the University is
equipped with a State New Medicine R&D Center
and an Education Ministry Key Laboratory of the
Ministry of Education.
The development of YNU-affiliated enterprises
has been very impressive. Over the past 10 years,
YNU Science & Technoloy has grown into a
publiclisted company with total assets of more
than RMB 1 billion (USD 120 million), having
started from a humble sum of less than RMB 100,000
(USD 1,209.19). In addition, YNU Biology
Corporation has become a leading Chinese
corporation for antibody research.
There are 177 software enterprises more than
2,000 software professionals in YNSDP. Prominent
member enterprises include Kunming Subsidiary of
Nantian Information Industries Group, Kunming
Mingxing Computers, the Yunnan subsidiary of
Tsinghua Tongfang Group, Kunming Spring Valley
Technologies and a subsidiary of American Wangson
International Group.
In 2002, their total sales revenue was RMB
839 million (USD 101.45 million).
