Applications of sement molding silicone rubber
Sement molding silicone rubber is suitable for industries sement, concrete, stone, fiberglass, gypsum, plaster resin crafts, poly resin crafts, unsaturated resin crafts, candle crafts, plastic crafts, stationeries, plaster crafts and Buddhist statue crafts.
Why use sement molding silicone rubber to cast sement?
Sement molding silicone is the first choice of sement material when casting 3 dimentional shapes that contain undercuts as it exhibits excellent release properties, a high level of surface detail, very good chemical and high temperature resistance.
Sement molding silicone rubber comes in a two-component system (base + catalyst) available in a hardness range of very soft to medium. It is available for making moulds that are poured, brushed or sprayed
Features of sement molding silicone rubber
1. Good characteristics of easy-operation
2. Light viscosity and good flowability
3. Low shrinkage
4. Favorable tension
5. No deformation
6. Favorable hardness
7. High temperature resistance, acid and alkali-resistance and ageing resistance
Making silicone sement molds: step by step
Step 1: Preparing mould
Once you have your model to mould you need to build a box from wood/acrylic to contain the silicone and get a good covering over your model. The size and shape of this container is totally depends on shape of the model, remembering to leave plenty room surrounding the model so that you will have a strong wall thickness (at least 20mm).
*Note small models can be cast in sourced containers like tins, ice cream buckets, cake tins, etc.
Once you have constructed your box and clamped it together you need to seal the box with a bead of clay around each corner to stop the silicone from leaking out.
Step 2: Measuring & mixing silicone
Silicone requires accurate weighing of components (A+B) to achieve a proper cure. It is important that you take your time and use an accurate set of scales. Dietary and postal scales are not accurate enough.
The most common mistake that people make when they are modeling with silicone is that they dont mix the two components well enough and thus it does not cure properly.
• You should mix the silicone for at least 4-5 minutes.
• Scrape down the walls and bottom as well as the mixing stick.
• Do not whip, fold the mixture to minimize air being trapped in the silicone.
• Always mix a little bit extra to be safe.
Step 3: Pouring the mould
Once you have carefully mixed the silicone, it is time to pour the mould. It is important that you don’t pour onto the mould and start at the lowest point. This way the silicone will push the air out as it flows over the model instead of trapping it.
Step 4: Demould
After setting the mould aside until cured remove the clamps from your box and you are ready to remove original model from the mould. The easiest way to approach this is to work your way around the side of the model pressing away the silicone allowing the model to loosen and air get underneath it.
Your mould is now complete and you are ready to start pouring parts.
