 Tips for Using Steel Fish Tapes:

     1.Pulling cable through conduit that already contains wires. Avoid the risk of electrical shock by disconnecting power to the existing wires before beginning the pull.

    2.Keep an eye on the fish tape as you feed it into the conduit, making sure that it’s free from bends or kinks.

    3.A great way to ensure that fish tape fastens securely to wire or pulling line is to wrap the connection point in plastic tape. Not only does the tape keep connections from pulling open, it also helps prevent the fish tape from kinking up.

    4.For long or multiple-bend conduit runs, cut down on wire friction with Wire-Pulling Lubricant.

    5.Balance is very important when you’re pulling wire with fish tape. Always stand in a safe area, and prior to beginning any pull, clear aside loose objects that may cause you to lose footing.

    6.Only pull fish tape with your hands,

    7.Flat-steel and stainless steel fish tapes are not intended for use with powered pulling machines, which can cause damage to the tape, as well as injury to the operator.

    8.When your steel fish tape isn’t in use, keep it safely stored inside its reel to prevent breakage, tripping hazards, and accidental contact with electrical circuits.

Inspecting and Maintaining Steel Fish Tapes:

     1.Routinely check steel fish tapes and fish-tape leaders for corrosion, cracks, distortion, nicks, or any other signs of wear that might result in breakage during pulling. Remember to also inspect the leader’s attachment-point, to ensure that it’s capable of forming a strong and secure connection with wire or pulling line.

     2.If you notice that dirt or wire-pulling lubricant is building up on the fish tape or in the reel, it’s time for a wash! A combination of warm water and mild detergent is an ideal cleaning solution for steel fish tapes and reels; steer clear of harsh chemicals and solvents… they only lead to corrosion. Avoid rust buildup by thoroughly wiping tapes and reels dry before storing
