The effect of the cooler is to reduce the intake temperature of the engine. It is usually made of 
aluminum alloy material. According to the different cooling medium, the common coolers can be 
divided into 2 types of air cooling and water cooling.
(1) the air-cooled air is used to cool the air through the medium cooler. The advantage is that the 
composition of the whole cooling system is less, and the structure is relatively simple than the water 
cooled medium cooler. The disadvantage is that the cooling efficiency is lower than that of the water 
cooled medium cooler, which usually requires a long connection pipe, and the air through the 
resistance is larger. Air cooled cooler because of its simple structure and low manufacturing cost and 
has been widely used, most turbocharged engines are used in air-cooled intercooler, for example TCI 
Huatai Terracan SUV and FAW Volkswagen Bora 1.8T equipped engine use air-cooled intercooler.

Intercooler: it is part of the turbocharging system. When the air is compressed in a high proportion, 
it produces high heat generating heat, which reduces the air expansion density, and also causes 
excessive damage to the engine temperature. In order to get higher volume efficiency, the high 
temperature air needs to be cooled before the cylinder is injected. This requires the installation of a 
radiator, the principle is similar to the radiator, the high temperature and high pressure air pipe 
distributed to many small, with a normal temperature air speed flows through the pipeline, so as to 
achieve the purpose of cooling (the gas temperature from 150 degrees Celsius to 50 degrees Celsius). 
Because the radiator is between the engine and the turbocharger, it is also called the central cooler, 
called the medium cooler.

The temperature of the engine exhaust gas discharged directly is as high as 8, 9 Baidu, will cause the 
turbine body, intake air temperature increased, and the compressed air power, compressed gas 
booster into the cylinder is likely to overheat caused by gasoline and pre detonation, affecting 
power output; at the same time, the high temperature and the engine stealth killer. Therefore, the 
turbocharged engine usually introduces the medium cooler to reduce the intake temperature. In 
general, reduced 50 ~ 60 degrees can use cold air temperature (left critical value), we can increase 
the compression ratio of the engine, improve power output at low speed; at the same time because 
of the cold air density, so under the same conditions, this design can improve the air density of the 
engine, so the engine work higher efficiency.
