Sodium metabisulfite's molecular structure consists of two sulfite groups connected by a sulfur-sulfur bond, representing a condensed form of sulfite. Its aqueous solution is acidic and reacts with strong acids (such as hydrochloric acid) to release sulfur dioxide gas. The equation is:
Na₂S₂O₅ + 2HCl → 2NaCl + 2SO₂↑ + H₂O
It readily oxidizes to sodium sulfate (Na₂S₂O₆) in air and decomposes into sodium sulfate and sulfur dioxide at high temperatures (>150°C). Furthermore, it can combine with metal ions (such as Fe⁺ and Al⁺) to form sulfite precipitates, making it a common method for removing heavy metals from industrial wastewater.
Production Process
The mainstream method involves the reaction of sulfur dioxide with sodium hydroxide solution to generate sodium bisulfite in a stepwise manner, followed by dehydration and condensation:
SO₂ + 2NaOH → Na₂SO₃ + H₂O
Na₂SO₃ + SO₂ → 2NaHSO₃
2NaHSO₃ → Na₂S₂O₅ + H₂O
Storage Requirements: Store in sealed containers in a dry, cool place, away from acids and oxidants to prevent moisture absorption, caking, and decomposition.
